Releasedate: 31-01-2025
Label: Kscope

Intro

Jonathan Hultén is a Swedish singer-songwriter, whom some of you know as the former guitarist of Tribulation. He has been active as a solo artist since 2017. Drawing inspiration from many elements and genres such as electronica, blues as well as works of illustrators such as Tove Jansson and Yoshitaka Amano, he has crafted a sound and aesthetic which he describes as “ambient dream-grunge”. His latest full-length “Eyes of the Living Night” is out now via Kscope.

Review

“Eyes of the Living Night” comes with twelve ethereal tracks. This time, we see Jonathan expanding his palette and experimenting with different beats and elements while keeping his essence. Each track takes us to different dimensions and opens doors to many colorful emotions, at times more dynamic and at times slow and gentle. The album feels more acoustic and ballad-like this time, making it more raw and stripped-down.

Compared to the previous releases, I found the tone of this record more hopeful while having the nice balance of the day and the night. There is an innocent ‘childish’ spirit to it even. At times you will want to dance and flow, and other times you will just want to sway gently and daydream. The album flows easily and each track comes with little surprises and twists. Soundwise, I picked up a bit of 70s/psych elements here and there.

I have been a fan of Jonathan Hulten’s solo adventures from the beginning, and “Eyes of the Living Night” exceeded my expectations. I didn’t expect anything less from him and I find myself discovering something new with each listen, and getting more curious. Kudos to Jonathan for this amazing magical piece. Daydreamers, lovers of dark folk and lovers of good music in general, listen to “Eyes of the Living Night” and be prepared to fly away!
